Etsy for Non-English Speakers: Accurate Tags, Titles & Supplier Details

Eligibility before SEO — policy review 12 October 2026
Ordinary ready-made retail resale and dropshipping are not allowed on Etsy. SEO, translation, custom packaging, photography, or production-partner disclosure do not make an ineligible product eligible.
Eligible craft supplies are tools or materials primarily used to create a new item by hand; ready-to-use blank clothing and tumblers do not qualify just because they could be decorated. Etsy also permits qualifying party supplies. These limited supply exceptions are different from production assistance.
POD and other production assistance can qualify for your original designs or items made with a buyer’s unique text or image. A stock colour or size choice is not buyer personalization. Disclose genuine production partners and accurate ship-from details on applicable listings. Tagword drafts copy; it does not approve products or certify compliance.
Official sources: Creativity Standards, dropshipping and reselling rules, and production partners. Review the current policies before listing; this is educational guidance, not Etsy approval.
Current title advice
Write a clear, easy-to-scan title naming the item and its most important objective traits, such as material, colour, and size. Etsy suggests considering fewer than 15 words; this is guidance, not a new hard limit. The 140-character limit is a maximum, not a target.
Put important details first for buyer clarity, not a promised ranking boost. Avoid repeated keywords, subjective claims, and long gift-recipient lists. Include holidays or occasions only when essential to the item. Use relevant tags, attributes, and descriptions for other search phrases.

Compliance guides
Google Translate gives you grammatically correct English — but not buyer English. Here's why that matters and how to fix it.
Why Direct Translation Fails for Etsy Tags
When you translate a product name from Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, or French into English, you get a literal translation — not what English-speaking buyers actually type. A "silver chain necklace" in a literal translation might become "silver jewellery link necklace" — technically correct, but buyers search "dainty silver necklace" or "minimalist chain necklace".
Buyer Language vs Product Language
Buyers on Etsy search by feeling, occasion, and use — not by product specification. They type "cosy reading gift" not "soft-cover hardback book". Learning buyer English is a skill that takes time to develop in a second language.
How AI Solves This
Tagword drafts English titles and tags from supported supplier pages or manually entered details. Verify translation accuracy and product eligibility before using the draft. Original English copy does not turn ordinary resale into an eligible Etsy item.
Practical Tips
Even if you use AI for your primary tags, study top-selling listings in your niche to understand how buyers describe products. Read Etsy buyer reviews — the exact phrases buyers use in reviews often make excellent tags.
